Research Project: Evolutionary Biology of Tospoviruses in Floral Crops

Location: Plant Science Research

Project Number: 6645-22000-015-01
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 13, 2000
End Date: Jun 30, 2005

Objective:
Identify collaborators in the floral crop industry from diverse geographic regions, from which representative samples of TSWV and INSV populations can be obtained for characterization. Characterize population diversity at the biological and molecular levels. Determine host and vector mediated changes in virus populations. Develop models of tospovirus populations that can then be tested as predictive models.

Approach:
TSWV and INSV will be collected from diverse sources in the floral crop industry representative of potential sources of virus. These field populations will be characterized at the molecular and biological level to identify distinguishing markers for each of the viral populations. This lab has the experience and knowledge of tospovirus genetics that will facilitate rapid development of markers. We will then determine how change s in floral crop host and vector influence the constitution of each of the populations. This baseline information will then allow us to associate molecular characteristics with specific sources that can then be tested as predictive models.
