Research Project:
Federal Quarantine for International and Domestic
movement of Saccharum Genetic Resources
Location:
Fruit
Project Number: 1275-21000-163-00
Project Type:
Appropriated
Start Date: May 01, 2003
End Date: Apr 30, 2008
Objective:
Develop and conduct an effective quarantine, pathogen detection and disease diagnosis, therapy, and distribution system to exchange sugarcane germplasm and related Poaceae among institutions of the United States and other countries; to facilitate the exchange of such species among states within this country.
Approach:
Identify germplasm of Saccharum (sugar cane) or related grass species to be moved domestically or internationally. Acquire, establish, and maintain accessions in quarantine. Apply therapeutic treatments, such as short and long hot water treatments, to eliminate pests and pathogens. Utilize criteria that comply with APHIS standards to detect and/or identify pathogens, such as viruses and bacteria, that persist through therapeutic treatments. Implement, adapt or develop new detection and diagnostic techniques, emphasizing molecular-based techniques, to expedite the quarantine and indexing process. Utilize electronic communication systems (e.g. e-mail and internet) and automatic data processing technology to communicate with clients, interface with the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN), and manage in-house information collection and analysis.
