Research Project: Survey of Slug and Snail Pests on Subsistence and Garden Crops in the Islands of the American Pacific

Location: Post-Harvest Tropical Commodities Research

Project Number: 5320-43000-013-06
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Oct 01, 2003
End Date: Apr 30, 2008

Objective:
1) To determine the geographical distributions of important snail and slug pests on the major islands of the American Pacific (American Samoa, Guam, Federated States of Micronesia, and the Northern Mariana Islands). 2) To find out which types of subsistence and garden crops commonly have problems with slug and snail feeding, and to determine which pest species are most important in causing damage to these crops. 3) To produce a color manual of the important snail and slug pests in the region and to use this manual to train extension and quarantine officers in the recognition, quarantine exclusion and control of these pests.

Approach:
Slug and smail pests will be collected from subsistence and garden plots in Guam, American Samoa, the Federated States of Micronesia and the Northern Mariana Islands. Pests will be identified and data will be summarized to determine the distributions and pest status of the important species. A color identification manual will be produced and used in training classes for quarantine and extension staff in each of the 4 island groups. Documents Reimbursable with FAS. Log 23817.
