Research Project:
Evaluation of Bt Cotton Lines for Effectiveness Against Lepidopteran Insects
Location:
Genetics and Precision Agriculture Research
Project Number: 6406-21000-010-13
Project Type:
Trust
Start Date: May 01, 1999
End Date: Apr 30, 2004
Objective:
To evaluate the effectiveness of cotton cultivars developed by Stoneville Seed Company containing one or more genes from Bacillus thuringiensis for control of bollworm and tobacco budworm.
Approach:
Selected cotton lines will be grown in field plots and artificially infested with Heliothis larvae and also grown in plots free of Heliothis larvae. Laboratory assays will be conducted with several species of larvae. Data will be collected to assess the effectiveness of the Bt gene(s) for control of the primary target pests. The various gene(s) constructs will also be evaluated for effects on agronomic and fiber properties. Effectiveness of Bt genes in different cotton lines will be measured to determine if line by Bt interactions exist.
