Research Project: Sampling Method, Management, and Breeding for Resistance to Reniform and Root-Knot Nematodes

Location: Crop Genetics and Production Research

Project Number: 6402-22000-003-01
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Aug 31, 2000
End Date: Aug 30, 2005

Objective:
Determine efficient sampling methods. Determine effect of soil type and production practices on nematode populations and cotton yield. Develop elite cotton germplasm with resistance or tolerance to reniform and root-knot nematodes.

Approach:
Evaluate sampling methods and correlate with soil texture with nematode densities. Sample farms in various Delta locations for nematode density and effect on yield. Determine effect of production practices on cotton yield and fiber quality. Transfer resistance and/or tolerance to root-knot and reniform nematodes into elite cotton germplasm using traditional and marker-assisted seledion. Evaluate methods for identifying resistance and tolerance to reniform and root-knot nematodes for use in an elite germplasm development program.
