Research Project:
Optimizing Irrigation Management for Humid Climates
Location:
Cropping Systems and Water Quality Research
Project Number: 3622-13610-001-00
Project Type:
Appropriated
Start Date: Apr 14, 2003
End Date: Apr 30, 2007
Objective:
Develop methods and techniques for design, operation, and management of irrigation systems in SE Mo; develop and evaluate the benefits and limitations of using site-specific management (precision agriculture) technologies for irrigated agriculture.
Approach:
Irrigated agriculture continues to increase in humid and semiarid areas of the Midwest. Because irrigation is supplemental to rainfall, profitability of irrigation depends upon seasonal rainfall marginal return for the crop irrigated, and costs associated with irrigation, including the water supply. To improve profitability and reduce risks, better methods are needed to determine irrigation timing and amount, especially with regard to anticipating rainfall and maximizing profit. Because of spatial variations in soils, crops, and rainfall, the use of precision irrigation systems and technologies for site-specific management also needs further development and testing.
