Research Project: Investigation of Nutrient Loss Mechanisms from Land-Applied Poultry Litter

Location: Natural Resources Systems Research

Project Number: 6206-11120-003-07
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Sep 01, 2002
End Date: Aug 31, 2005

Objective:
Quantify nutrient losses from surface applied litter on pastures and incorporated litter on crop production areas and evaluate the feasibility of applying litter to cropland in the Texas Blackland Prairie.

Approach:
Poultry litter application will continue on ten small watersheds at rates from 0 to 6 tons/acre. Dissolved and sediment-bound nutrient losses will be measured with automated runoff sampling equipment. Crop production and soil quality impacts will also be evaluated.
