Research Project: Development of a Test to Rapidly Diagnose Race 4 Fusarium Oxysporum Vasinfectum

Location: Western Integrated Cropping Systems Research

Project Number: 5303-21220-002-06
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 16, 2004
End Date: May 31, 2006

Objective:
To develop a rapid test to diagnose cotton plants and/or soil samples for presence of Fusarium oxysporum vasinfectum Race 4.

Approach:
Identify, to Race, the fungal plant pathogen Fusarium oxysporum vasinfectum (FOV). Race 4 FOV has recently been discovered in California and has the potential to kill cotton plants without other mitigating factors such as the presence of nematodes. Race 4 was originally described from India and appeared in California in 2001. In addition, importation of cottonseed from foreign countries such as Australia may be contaminated with other Races of FOV and there is a fear that these strains may be introduced into the US. Documents SCA with UC Davis. Formerly 5303-21220-001-15S (10/04).
