Research Project:
Eo-1 and Landsat Inter-Satellite Comparison at Two Established Arizona Field Sites
Location:
Southwest Watershed Research
Project Number: 5342-12660-003-04
Project Type:
Reimbursable
Start Date: Jan 01, 2000
End Date: Sep 30, 2004
Objective:
The Earth Observation-1 (EO-1) mission is scheduled for launch in July 2000 with a primary objective of evaluating selected technologies for maintaining the 27-year continuity of the Landsat data stream. The primary objective of this proposed study is to determine the suitability of the EO-1 image quality and data products to meet the needs of Landsat-class observations, termed Landsat data continuity.
Approach:
The study sites will be the Maricopa Agricultural Center (MAC) near Phoenix and the Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed (WGEW) near Tucson, Arizona. The research approach will consist of two parallel studies based on an existing set of Landsat-4, -5 and -7 TM and ETM+ images at MAC and WGEW, and a set of coincident EO-1 ALI and Landsat-7 ETM+ images to be acquired soon after the EO-1 launch. Using on-site measurements of atmospheric conditions and measurements of surface reflectance of large, uniform targets, we will determine the accuracy of image reflectance factor retrieval. For the same images, we will use on-site measurements of soil and plant characteristics to determine the accuracy of image-derived data products suitable for agricultural and rangeland applications.
