Research Project:
Soil/site Stability and Sustainable Rangeland Ecosystems
Location:
Southwest Watershed Research
Project Number: 5342-12660-003-03
Project Type:
Reimbursable
Start Date: Feb 01, 2000
End Date: Dec 31, 2004
Objective:
Exchange databases, simulation models, and information systems to strengthen research in both countries, strengthen the ARS rangeland health assessment system by including componenets and data from the New Zealand REDIS (ecological assessment and best management practice databases) technology, investigate methods of strengthening REDIS by incorporation of modern erosion prediction technology, and develop improved, scientificallybased decisions tools for assessment of rangeland health.
Approach:
Conduct two workshops on soil erosion, expert systems, rangeland health and REDIS in New Zealand (FY2000) and in USA (FY2001) to define common research and technology objectives and develop cooperative simulation modeling approaches. Determine best methods of combining ARS erosion prediction technology with New Zealand plant growth models and best management practices databases to develop a rangeland health assessment tool incorporating biotic and abiotic components. Apply the new technology to assessment of soil/site stability and best management practices for sustainable management of rangeland resources. Document and present the research results using integrated information systems technology including Internet-based technology transfer. Documents Reimbursable with FAS Log #17467.
