Research Project: Landscape Vulnerability of U.S. - Mexico Border Region

Location: Range Management Research

Project Number: 6235-11210-005-12
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: May 01, 2000
End Date: Sep 30, 2004

Objective:
With EPA National Environmental Research Lab, our objective is to develop arid ecosystem assessment and monitoring techniques suitable for landscape level scales. Specific objectives are to: 1) improve risk assessment analyses based on remotely sensed data, 2) characterize vegetation dynamics in response to natural environmental stresses (eg., drought) and anthropogenic disturbances (eg., livestock grazing), and 3) develop monitoring techniques for quantity management impacts on soil properties.

Approach:
The basic experiments continue the long-term studies initially established in our 1993-98 and 1997-2000 cooperative agreements. These studies have been linked with our National Science Foundation research program that describes patterns of primary productivity and effects of disturbances on arid rangelands.
