Research Project:
Weed Management and Revegetation in the Great Basin
Location:
Range and Meadow Forage Management Research
Project Number: 5360-22000-002-00
Project Type:
Appropriated
Start Date: Sep 17, 2002
End Date: Aug 31, 2005
Objective:
Determine the impacts of weather and management on growth and reproduction of important Great Basin noxious weeds and develop biologically based weed management systems. In collaboration with the ARS unit at Reno, study the biology and control of invasive annual grasses and apply this information to develop management systems for sustainable rangelands
Approach:
This research will build on existing efforts to evaluate the use of livestock as control agents for perennial pepperweed. This research will be expanded to include studies on knapweeds and other perennial weeds, grazing/herbicide combinations, biological control, and more detail on the population biology and appropriate restoration techniques for weed-dominated rangeland. Part of the research will focus on mechanisms of competition between weeds and desirable native and introduced species. A portion of the work will focus on the impacts of weed invasion on existing species. Decision-support tools will be researched and developed to assist land managers in applying existing and new knowledge associated with Great Basin rangeland weeds. Program Increase $225,000 12/99; 1 new SY. Formerly 5360-22000-001-00D (8/02). FY03 Program Increase $335,306. Add 1 SY. FY04 Program Increase $120,783.
