Research Project: Soil and Crop Management for Resource Conservation in Mexico and the Southern United States

Location: Natural Resources Systems Research

Project Number: 6206-13610-005-12
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 01, 2001
End Date: Aug 31, 2006

Objective:
The objectives of this project are to: 1) Determine crop production characteristics and soil properties as a function of tillage and crop residue management and 2) Develop and apply computer models for predicting crop yields and managing soil and water resources for selected soil-crop climate complexes.

Approach:
Long-term tillage plots at several sites in Texas and Mexico will be periodically sampled to determine the effects of tillage and residue management on crop production, soil carbon storage, and plant nutrient cycling. Crop status measurements will be made several times during the crop growing season at selected sites in Texas and Mexico. Satellite imagery will be obtained for the sites and procedures will be developed to estimate crop parameters for computer models based on the satellite data. Natural resource models will be developed for predicting crop yields and soil and nutrient losses using satellite imagery and ground based data. The models will be used to predict crop yields and soil and nutrient losses over large areas.
