Research Project:
Evaluation of the Phenotypic and Genetic Diversity of Two Significant Collections of Juglans Nigra in the Midwest
Location:
Nat'l Clonal Germplasm Rep - Tree Fruit & Nut Crops & Grapes
Project Number: 5306-21000-015-04
Project Type:
Specific C/A
Start Date: Sep 01, 2002
End Date: Sep 01, 2004
Objective:
To evaluate two collections of eastern black walnut for a number of
morphological and phenological characteristics. To establish a core set of accessions from those collections, and to perform microsatellite genotyping of this core set.
Approach:
A population of 76 nut producing clones maintained at the University of
Missouri will be evaluated for dichogamy, kernal color, nut shape, shell thickness, percent crackout, pistillate bloom date, pollen shed date, harvest date and leafing date. A core subset of 25 clones will be selected from this collection and further analysis will be performed on them with SSR genotyping. Another set of eight clones that exhibit interlocking grain in their wood is maintainted at Purdue University and will be examined for the same set of descriptors and by SSR genotyping. Data for all of these accessions will be entered into tht GRIN database.
