Research Project:
MANAGEMENT OF FRUIT AND NUT CROP GENETIC RESOURCES
Location:
Nat'l Clonal Germplasm Rep - Tree Fruit & Nut Crops & Grapes
Project Number: 5306-21000-015-00
Project Type:
Appropriated
Start Date: May 16, 2003
End Date: May 15, 2008
Objective:
Preserve clonal collections of assigned species. Identify specific collections gaps. (i.e. grape and tree fruit and nut germplasm) and acquire genetically-diverse plants with emphasis on better species and geographic reprsentation Acquire basic descriptor and evaluation data. Document characterization and evaluation data into local databases. Improve methodology of propagation, preservation, evaluation, health status and assessment of genetic diversity. Coordinate with other ARS repositories.
Approach:
Obtain new acquisitions to fill collection gaps and broaden diversity. Make contacts with appropriate institutions to exchange diverse germplasm. Through interactions with CGC's, develop exploration proposals. Encourage cooperative research on cryopreservation of buds of moderate to low chill accessions of tree fruits. Place documenation emphasis on timely entry of evaluation data and review and updating of passport and source data. This data will be loaded into local database and GRIN systems and periodcally uploaded into GRIN system. Expand assessment of genetic diversity by SSR technique and other molecular techniques in Vitis and other genera. Obtain descriptor data for traits of most value to users. Distribute to researchers worldwide. Inform public. Formerly 5306-21000-014-00D (5/03).
