Research Project: Field Efficacy of Brucella Abortus Strain Rb51 in Feral Swine

Location: Bacterial Diseases of Livestock

Project Number: 3625-32000-061-02
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 07, 2001
End Date: Aug 20, 2005

Objective:
Evaluate the efficacy of the Brucella abortus strain RB51 vaccine in protecting feral swine against brucellosis under field conditions.

Approach:
Feral swine will be captured, identified by eartag and tatoo, and blood obtained for brucellosis serologic evaluation. Swine will be randomly assigned for subcutaneous vaccination with 10**10 CFU of Brucella abortus strain RB51 or 2ml of saline. Approximately 200 swine will be captured such that each treatment group (vaccinate-seropositive, vaccinated seronegative, control-seropositive, and control-seronegative) contains 50 animals. Between 10 and 12 months after vaccination, 25-30 feral swine in each treatment group will be recaptured, euthanized, and blood and tissue samples obtained for bacteriologic, serologic, and histologic evaluation. Statistical analysis will be conducted to determine if B. abortus strain RB51 vaccination protects feral swine against virulent B. suis under field conditions.
