Research Project: Characterization of Ovine Placental Cell Lines Supporting Prp-Sc Propagation

Location: Animal Diseases Research

Project Number: 5348-32000-021-02
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Mar 01, 2002
End Date: Feb 28, 2007

Objective:
The objective of this project is to develop in vitro methods for propagating placental cells associated with PrP-Sc accumulation.

Approach:
ARS has developed techniques for live animal and postmortem diagnostic techniques for ovine scrapie and initiated in-vivo studies on transmission of the disease by placental tissues and fluids. The current project addresses the need for an in vitro system to supplement the use of infected live animals. Fetal trophoblast and maternal uterine cell lines will be developed from normal and scrapie infected sheep. The cell lines will be characterized and their potential for propagation of PrP-Sc determined. BSL-1; 9-4-01. Documents SCA with U. Of Idaho.
