Research Project:
Efficient Nutrient Use in Manure-Amended Cropping Systems
Location:
New England Plant, Soil and Water Research Laboratory
Project Number: 1915-12000-001-00
Project Type:
Appropriated
Start Date: Apr 03, 2000
End Date: Apr 02, 2005
Objective:
1.) To develop an understanding of the key factors and interactions regulating plant-availability of manure-derived nutrients across a range of soils, environments, and manure compositions, and 2.) to develop management practices that enhance water quality by synchronizing nutrient availability with nutrient demand in manure-amended cropping systems.
Approach:
Component, process-oriented research will be conducted to develop an understanding of the key factors and interactions regulating plant availability of manure-derived nutrients (Objective 1). Knowledge gained from achieving Objective 1 will be integrated to develop, refine, and eventually transfer systems level management practices in accordance with Objective 2. The basic premise of this approach is that sufficient knowledge of the critical factors, processes, and their interactions regulating nutrient availability from manure in well-defined (laboratory) and well-monitored (field) systems, will allow us to scale up that information to a new agroecosystem hierarchical level and develop management practices which can be accurately applied to that new, higher level.
