Research Project: Development of Attractant Technology for Management of Colorado Potato Beetle

Location: Chemicals Affecting Insect Behavior

Project Number: 1275-22000-191-05
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: Jun 01, 2000
End Date: May 31, 2005

Objective:
The objectives are: (1) Continue laboratory behavioral bioassays and chemical analyses to determine ratios and emission rates for synthetic blends of plant volatiles for maximal attraction of Colorado potato beetle; (2) Determine efficacy of volatile blends in the field during potato growing season and optimize trap design and placement.

Approach:
1. Laboratory behavioral bioassays Blends of odorants found to be active in coupled GC/EAD experiments will be tested for behavioral activity in an open Y-track olfatometer. Both male and female, laboratory-reared and field-collected Colorado potato beetles will be tested. Results from bioassays will be analyzed using the hypothesis on proportions based on the standard normal approximation. 2. Field tests Field tests will be performed in both Maine (Orono and Presque Isle) and Beltsville, Maryland. Cigarette filters will be used as release substrates for the experimental blends which will be diluted in 0.5 ml of the following mixture by weight: polyethylene glycol 1000, 20%; methanol, 42.5%; glycerol, 25%; and distilled water, 12.5%. Differenes between chemical blends, trap types, and release devices will be analyzed using the parametric analysis of variance, and differences between treatments will be compared using Tukey's procedure. Differences in response to treatments by sex and date will be determined.
