Research Project: SELECTION OF DURABLE RESISTANCE TO LATE BLIGHT OF POTATO IN THE TOLUCA VALLEY OF MEXICO

Location:

Project Number: 5354-21220-002-10
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 21, 2001
End Date: Sep 20, 2006

Objective:
Expose breeding populations derived from U.S. federal and state experiment station potato breeding programs to late blight oomycete in the Toluca Valley of Mexico. Select non-race specific durable resistance. Assess current sources of resistance for durability under Toluca Valley conditions and genetic diversity of the pathogen.

Approach:
Potato clones constituting the breeding populations will be produced as pathogen free tubers in sterilized soil. Tubers will be planted in the field in Metepec under the auspices of PICTIPAPA. Upon development of symptoms, weekly readings of percent foliar infection will be performed. Area under the disease progress curve will be determined. Late blight populations will be assessed for virulence gene diversity on an annual basis. Data sets will be provided to cooperators. Promising clones will be retained, multiplied, and evaluated over several years time. USDA/ARS germplasm will be shared with Mexican cooperators. Documents SCA with PICTIPAPA. Formerly 5354-21220-007-20S (10/01). Formerly 5354-21220-008-20S, 8/2003.
