Research Project: Development of Virus-Free Potato Germplasm in Alaska

Location: Subarctic Agricultural Research Unit

Project Number: 5341-21220-001-01
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: Sep 01, 2002
End Date: Aug 30, 2004

Objective:
There is a need for increased research to evaluate potatoes grown in northern climates, particularly in developing virus-free potato germplasm. Virus-free potatoes will allow potato producers to increase export trade. Objectives include 1) Development of environmentally-friendly approaches to control viral pathogen infection and 2) Improved methods for virus and vector detection.

Approach:
Approaches may include: 1) Development of management practices that eliminate or reduce viral infection of seed potatoes; 2) Development of improved methods for detection of virus and vector infection/infestation; 3) Evaluation of potato germplasm for resistance to viral diseases; and 4) Development of reference families, molecular genetic markers and the elucidation of genetic mechanisms of determination of resistance to viral infection and/or proliferation.
