Research Project: Molecular Characterization of Potato Virus Y Isolates Found in the United States Causing Potato Tuber Necrotic Ringspot Disease

Location:

Project Number: 500-42-001-40
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 01, 2003
End Date: Apr 30, 2005

Objective:
To better understand the PVY(NTN) virus so that ultimately an accurate and reliable single step detection method can be developed for detecting PVY(NTN) in potato seed stocks and to prevent the spread of the virus.

Approach:
Identify and characterize PVY isolates found with the US that cause PTNRD; perform sequence analysis of key sections of the viral genome that have been linked to the induction of necrosis; compare the new information from these isolates to previously published data on PVY isolates found in other geographical locations.
