Research Project: Enhanced Breeding for Resistance to Silver Scurf Disease of Potato

Location:

Project Number: 500-42-001-50
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 01, 2003
End Date: Apr 30, 2005

Objective:
Re-establish the previously identified accessions of wild species with resistance to silver scurf; identify new accessions of wild species with resistance to silver scurf; propagate these selections and maintain them in a disease-free state; introgress silver scurf resistance into S. tuberosum using a dedicated cross block by traditional breeding techniques; evaluate resistance of commercially acceptable selections using a combination of laboratory and storage trials; provide silver scurf resistant germplasm to other breeding programs in the US.

Approach:
Dedicated cross blocks using wild species and S. tubersoum cultivars will be established for breeding cultivars with resistance to silver scurf. A combination of laboratory, greenhouse, and field screening will be used to identify advanced selections with resistance to the silver scurf disease.
