Research Project: Insect Midgut Differentiation Factors and Biological Control

Location: Insect Biocontrol

Project Number: 1275-22000-202-01
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Jul 01, 2003
End Date: Sep 30, 2004

Objective:
To examine the control of proliferation and differentiation of midgut stem cells in insects and to utilize this information in a biocontrol strategy.

Approach:
Stem cells provide the cell mass for four-fold growth of the midgut at each larval molt and for replacement of damaged midgut goblet or columnar cells during an instar. Two aspects of stem cell activity are regulated.
