Research Project: Identification and Characterization of Biological Factors and Control Options for Powdery Scab

Location:

Project Number: 500-42-001-63
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: Apr 19, 2004
End Date: Apr 18, 2005

Objective:
Utilize greenhouse techniques to screen chemical compounds for activity against S. Subterranea and identify resistant germplasm; Identify host factors and environmental factors involved in infection and disease development, and; continue field trials to determine optimum timing, rate, placement, and application methods for chemical treatments shown to be beneficial in control of powdery scab.

Approach:
Screen chemicals in dilution series and in single and multiple applications on potato plantlets in greenhouse for activity against S. subterranean; screen advanced clones from the Colorado breeding program, three years removed from original selection, for resistance; further evaluate clones showing resistance; identify and utilize parental lines conferring a high frequency of resistance in a focused breeding effort. Establish field plots in a naturally infested field to examine timing of root and tuber infection, symptomology on roots and tubers, disease incidence and severity relative to tuber location within the soil and relative to the mother plant, inoculum density relative to disease expression on tubers, and soil moisture and temperature relative to tuber location and disease incidence.
