Objective:
INCREASE LEVELS OF DISEASE RESISTANCE IN TETRAPLOID AND DIPLOID POTATO GERMPLASM BASES, AND DEVELOP NEW, DISEASE-RESISTANT CULTIVARS. IMPROVE TETRAPLOID AND DIPLOID POTATO GERMPLASM BASES FOR IMPORTANT PROCESSING MARKET QUALITIES AND DEVELOP NEW IMPROVED CULTIVARS FOR PROCESSING. IMPROVE TETRAPLOID AND DIPLOID POTATO GERMPLASM BASES FOR NUTRITIONAL QUALITY, AND DEVELOP NEW CULTIVARS WITH HIGHER LEVELS OF CAROTENOIDS. DEVELOP QUANTITATIVE GENETIC MODELS FOR 4X-2X BREEDING.
Approach:
USE RECURRENT MASS SELECTION TO IMPROVE DIPLOID POPULATIONS FOR DISEASE RESISTANCES, PROCESSING QUALITY, AND CAROTENOID CONTENT. USE PARENTAL LINE BREEDING TO IMPROVE TETRAPLOID POPULATIONS FOR DISEASE RESISTANCES, PROCESSING QUALITY, AND CAROTENOID CONTENT, AND TO GENETICALLY TRANSFER THESE TRAITS FROM IMPROVED DIPLOIDS TO THE TETRAPLOID LEVEL VIA 4X-2X CROSSES. USE COMPUTER SIMULATIONS IN DEVELOPING QUANTITATIVE GENETIC MODELS FOR 4X-2X BREEDING. SCREEN WILD SPECIES ACCESSIONS FOR DISEASE RESISTANT AND INCORPORATE RESISTANCE SELECTIONS INTO THE ESTABLISHED LONG-DAY ADAPTED DIPLOID HYBRID S. PHUREJA - S. STENOTOMUM POPULATIONS.
