Research Project:
Dielectric Properties Measurements & Applications for Moisture and Product Quality Determination
Location:
Quality Assessment Research Unit
Project Number: 6612-44000-024-01
Project Type:
Specific C/A
Start Date: Sep 20, 2001
End Date: Sep 19, 2006
Objective:
To develop improved methods for dielectric properties measurements and applications, including on-line moisture sensing in grain and quality sensing in other agricultural products.
Approach:
New techniques for measuring low-frequency, radio-frequency, and microwave dielectric properties of agricultural products will be explored that can rapidly obtain desired information efficiently over broad ranges of frequency. The use of these techniques will then be studied for indirect determination of product quality factors such as moisture content, dry-matter content, and maturity. Promising methods for indirect quality measurements will then be explored for on-line sensing of moisture content and other quaity factors that will have applications in modern agricultural production, processing, and marketing.
