Research Project: Ipm Studies of the Small Hive Beetle, Aethina Tumida

Location: The Kika DE La Garza Subtropical Agricultural Research Cntr
Honey Bee Research

Project Number: 6204-21000-009-01
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 06, 2000
End Date: Sep 30, 2004

Objective:
Investigate the biology of the SHB in it's native habitat. Study the various IPM aspects such as biological, cultural and chemical controls in South Africa for use in the U.S.

Approach:
Hire a graduate student in South Africa to rear larval and adult SHB for potential parasites, predators, or pathogens. Define SHB population dynamics under various management regimes. Quantify bee behavior toward the SHB. Use this information to conduct concurrent studies in the U.S. on introduced SHB. Further in the U.S., determine an economic threshold for the SHB.
