Research Project: Small Hive Beetle Research in the Southern U.S. - Biology and Control

Location: Honey Bee Research

Project Number: 6204-21000-009-02
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Jan 01, 2002
End Date: Dec 31, 2004

Objective:
To determine an integrated approach for control of the small hive beetle utilizing biological, chemical and mechanical means for managing beetle populations in the southern U.S.

Approach:
The small hive beetle is mostly an economic pest in the southeastern U.S., all research will be conducted in Georgia and Florida. Interactions of honey bee strains with small hive beetle invasions will be quantified in field settings. For these strains of honey bees, an economic threshold of beetles will be determined and provided to beekeepers for use in decisions on treatment timing and most effective tactics for control.
