Research Project: Characterzation of Phytochemicals in North America prunus Germplasm

Location: Nat'l Clonal Germplasm Rep - Tree Fruit & Nut Crops & Grapes

Project Number: 5306-21000-015-05
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 01, 2002
End Date: Sep 01, 2004

Objective:
To evaluate a number of Prunus species from North Amercia for the incidence and concentrations of a number of nutritive phytochemicals.

Approach:
Eleven species and several species hybrids of the genus Prunus will be evaluated for the incidence and concentrations of a number of nutrietive phytochemicals. These phytochemicals belong to the anthocyanin, phenolic, flavenoid and antioxident groups of chemicals. Analysis will be performed on various fruit tissue parts using the appropriate HPLC or other methodologies. Additional measurements of pH, titratable acidity and brix will be taken. Analysis of the data will be completed and entered into the GRIN database for the accessions tested. Documents SCA with L. Louisiana Ag. Exp. Station.
