Research Project:
DECIDUOUS FRUIT IMPROVEMENT AND PROTECTION FROM PESTS
Location:
Fruit and Nut Research
Project Number: 6606-21220-008-00
Project Type:
Appropriated
Start Date: Apr 24, 2003
End Date: Apr 23, 2008
Objective:
Research develops new scion and rootstock varieties for peach, nectarine, and plum and develops environmentally sound strategies for the control of arthropod pests on these fruit crops.
Approach:
Research identifies and develops improved scion varieties of peach, nectarine, and plum possessing adaptability to the hot humid environments of the southeastern United States. Variety development emphasizes high fruit quality within specific marketing windows and niches, in competition with other domestic production, development of high levels of disease resistance, and the development of new peach varieties with increased post-harvest longevity. Research also focuses development of improved prunus rootstock varieties that confer tolerance to nematodes, peach tree short life, oak root rot, and other disease and arthropod pests. Arthropod research addresses the development of environmentally and economically sound strategies for the control of plum curculio, borers, scales, and cat-facing insects of peach, nectarine, and plum.
