Research Project: PROPAGATION OF WSU STRAWBERRY AND RASPBERRY SELECTIONS FOR TESTING

Location: Horticultural Crops Research

Project Number: 5358-22000-028-01
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 29, 2000
End Date: Sep 30, 2004

Objective:
Elimination of viruses from Rubus and Fragaria selections produced in the WSU breeding program. To ensure that the selections developed in the program are virus-free prior to being evaluated in yield trials. Selections made by the breeder are established in tissue culture and sent here for virus testing and clean-up. Plants are returned to the breeding program for propagation and establishment of yield trials. Cultivars are retested to ensure materials are still virus-free before commercial release.

Approach:
Selections from the WSU breeding program will be established in tissue culture in Puyallup and shipped to Corvallis for therapy. Tissue culture plants will be heat treated in a chamber with temperature cycling between 38C and 30C every 4 hours and maintained with a 14 hour daylength. After 6 weeks, meristems will be removed and cultured to regenerate whole plants. The plants will be virus-indexed and plants testing negative will be returned to Puyallup for further evaluation.
