Research Project:
Evaluation of Processing Quality of Berry Selections and Varieties
Location:
Horticultural Crops Research
Project Number: 5358-21000-036-04
Project Type:
Specific C/A
Start Date: Aug 05, 2002
End Date: Jun 30, 2005
Objective:
Evaluate berry selections and varieties from Chad Finn's breeding program(USDA/ARS/HCRL, NCSFR) for objective attributes related to processing quality.Process samples of advanced selections, selected field crosses, and standard cultivars for display to and evaluation by breeders, growers, and processors. Include blueberries, black raspberries, and other berries grown around the region along with strawberries, blackberries and raspberries as has been done in the past. Prepare summary of all data in report format for use by breeders and industry members.
Approach:
Berries will be sampled for chemical analysis, washed, inspected for defects, graded by hand, and processed primarily into IQF whole berries. When appropriate, berries will be sliced so that internal color can be evaluated.Berry samples will be processed weekly to evaluate size and quality changes throughout the harvest season. Fruit from plants of differing ages and from different fields will be sampled whenever possible. Promising new crosses in the early stages of selection may be processed once or several times. Objective quality data (°brix, pH, TA) will be measured and recorded as well as any other relevant data. Documents SCA with Oregon State University. Formerly 5358-21000-023-10S (3/03).
