Research Project: Gene Probes for Determination of Aflatoxigenic Potential of Aspergillus Species

Location: Food and Feed Safety Research

Project Number: 6435-41420-004-03
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Apr 01, 1998
End Date: Mar 31, 2003

Objective:
Assess Aspergillus strains, some of which are used in fermentation processes for production of foods, for the presence or absence of aflatoxin genes and/or their expression products (mRNA's).

Approach:
Recently available cloned genes will be used as probes in laboratory DNA/RNA hybridization assays (Southern blots and Northern blots) to detect the presence or absence of aflatoxin genes and/or their expression products.
