Research Project: Develop Process to Produce Cottonseed Meal with Consistently Low Free and Available Gossypol

Location: Commodity Utilization Research

Project Number: 6435-41000-096-03
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 25, 2002
End Date: Dec 31, 2004

Objective:
To obtain compositional data and gossypol availability information with lamb model for the products produced by mini mills and explore value-added uses of cottonseed products and by-products.

Approach:
(1) Duplicate samples from each critical step of a mini mill will be collected and analyzed for their composition and quality. (2) Quantity of meals derived from each mini mill will be fed to lamb to assess the availability of gossypol in these products. (3) Innovative processing technology or conditions to improve productivity and product quality will be explored. (4) Value-added uses of cottonseed meaaals and by-products will be continued. This effort should include: (a) nutraceuticals; (b) antitumor activity; (c) insect control; (d) nutrients for microbes; and (e) other non-food and non-feed applications.
