Research Project: Industrial and Value Added Uses of Cottonseed Products

Location: Commodity Utilization Research

Project Number: 6435-41000-096-04
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Jul 01, 2001
End Date: Jun 30, 2005

Objective:
Synthesize appropriate fluorescent Schiff base reagents and determine their HPLC characteristics and reactivity with gossypol using a fluorescent HPLC detection method. Explore additional non-food and non-feed applications of cottonseed products.

Approach:
The Schiff base will be prepared from gossypol and its HPLC behavior and fluorescence will be determined. Further study of the application using cottonseed oils in fuel additive, motor oil, cancer inhibition research, concrete mold releasing agent, etc. will be involved in working with collaborators. The majority of the funds will be used to purchase chemicals and supplies. When needs are identified. A portion of the funds may be used to procure equipment or components of instuments.
