Research Project: Does the Presence of Peanut Proteins in Breast Milk Sensitize Or Tolerize Infants?

Location: Food Processing and Sensory Quality Research

Project Number: 6435-43440-010-01
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Jan 01, 2002
End Date: Dec 31, 2006

Objective:
The objective of this research is to determine if the presence of peanut proteins in breast milk sensitize or tolerize infants to peanuts.

Approach:
Quantify levels of proteins from peanut, cow's milk, soy and egg in breast milk, saliva and blood of lactating women. Analyze samples of breast milk, blood and saliva from non-secretors following ingestion of peanut meal for presence of degradation fragments of major peanut and other food allergens after meals of cow's milk, soy and hen's egg, respectively. Test for correlation between presence of intact Ara h 1 and Ara h 2 and fragments of these allergens in breast milk and saliva with respect to secretor/non-secretor status.
