Research Project: Northern Great Plains Native Plant Development and Increase Project

Location: Natural Resource Management Research

Project Number: 5445-21000-008-03
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Aug 01, 2003
End Date: Jun 30, 2008

Objective:
Develop management methods that enhance rangeland health through restoring the components of the original vegetation on U.S. Forest Service land in the Sheyenne National Grasslands. This work will expand the scope of existing research at the Northern Great Plains Research Laboratory.

Approach:
Grasslands that are heavily invaded with exotic cool-season grasses will be selected within the Sheyenne National Grasslands in North Dakota sites within these grasslands will have five different restoration treatments applied to them. The treatments will include 1) fire, 2) chemical treatment, 3) chemical treatment and fire, 4) raking to remove litter, and 5) mowing. All treatment will be applied in early spring when the cool-season exotics are in the stem elongation stage. Baseline measurements will be taken on species composition. Species composition will be monitored annually to determine the effectiveness and rate of recovery for the different treatments.
