Research Project: WHAT IS THE EXTENT OF METABOLIC PLASTICITY IN THE LIGNIFICATION PROCESS AND CAN IT BE EXPLOITED?

Location: U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center

Project Number: 3655-21000-033-02
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Aug 25, 2000
End Date: Apr 30, 2004

Objective:
We will elucidate, via powerful NMR and lignin-degradative methods, the changes in lignin composition and structure resulting from upand downregulation of several monolignol-biosynthetic-pathway genes/enzymes, and begin to elucidate the biochemical implications.

Approach:
Transgenic plant materials will be obtained from extensive collaborations with other laboratories. Lignins will be isolated and characterized by NMR methods. Isolated lignins and whole cell walls will be further characterized by our DFRC method. Novel components (or models for them) will be synthesized, and the source of marker compounds will be sought by synthesis and degradation of appropriate lignin model compounds. Novel lignin components will be assessed for the ability to enter into lignification radical coupling reactions via biomimetic means.
