Research Project: Reducing Energy Use for Microirrigation

Location: Water Management Research

Project Number: 5302-13000-009-12
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Jan 01, 2002
End Date: May 31, 2004

Objective:
Quantify and determine sources of pressure loss and ways to reduce energy use for microirrigation systems in California. Documents Reimbursable with CA Dept. water Resources.Log 21065.

Approach:
Use 250 sets of existing irrigation evaluation (mobile lab) data to determine the range and distribution of water pressures used for microirrigation systems. Determine the sources of pressure loss in the systems in the San Joaquin and central coastal valleys to measure system pressures and equipment pressure losses. Estimate potential pressure savings that might be gained through improved operation/maintenance, improved design, and alternative equipment selection. Interview approximately 8 microirrigation system designers to determine criteria that are used in the design process and the rational for pressure requirements. Determine how their design strategy has changed in the last 5-10 years in regard to pressure requirements and operating criteria for the equipment, the rationale for the specifications and potential/constraints for reducing pressure requirements. Survey equipment sources and the engineering literature to determine if there are innovative alternative filtration and control valving equipment or concepts that require low pressure to operate.
