Research Project: Effect of Plant Species Diversity on Intake and Productivity of Grazing Lactating Dairy Cows

Location: Pasture Systems & Watershed Management Research

Project Number: 1902-13210-003-02
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 25, 2000
End Date: Sep 24, 2005

Objective:
To determine the effects of varying levels of plant species diversity on intake, grazing behavior, and productivity of grazing lactating dairy cows.

Approach:
A three-year experiment will be conducted to evaluate the effects of plant species diversity on intake, grazing behavior, and productivity of grazing lactating dairy cows. Effects of four plant diversity treatments on animal productivity and intake will be evaluated by measuring forage intake, milk yield, and grazing behavior. Sward structure will be measured and related to grazing behavior and forage intake. Persistence of individual plant species will also be monitored.
