Research Project:
MANAGEMENT OF GRASSLAND AND PASTURE IN APPALACHIA FOR SUSTAINABLE FORAGE AND LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION
Location:
Appalachian Farming Systems Research Center
Project Number: 1932-31630-002-00
Project Type:
Appropriated
Start Date: Dec 06, 2002
End Date: Dec 05, 2007
Objective:
Create management strategies and forage plant communities that expand the spatial and temporal boundaries of forage production; optimize resource utilization in pasture-based livestock production systems; and benefit biological diversity and ecosystem stability for the Appalachian Region.
Approach:
This will be accomplished by: (1) Determining patterns of seasonal distribution of herbage productivity and nutritive value as a function of disturbance caused by season, weather conditions and grazing or clipping management; (2) Determining response patterns of forages in mixed swards to inputs (manure and plant residue) and nutrient flux in grazed pasture systems to improve forage plant establishment, persistence and productivity, especially under marginal conditions, and quantify impacts on water resource quality; and (3) Increasing basic knowledge of forage plant developmental biology, nutritive value, production and management requirements along edaphic and environmental resource gradients.
