Research Project:
CONSERVATION, CHARACTERIZATION, AND EVALUATION OF CROP GENETIC RESOURCES AND ASSOCIATED INFORMATION
Location:
Plant Genetic Resources Conservation Research
Project Number: 6607-21000-009-00
Project Type:
Appropriated
Start Date: Sep 27, 2003
End Date: Sep 26, 2008
Objective:
Conserve genetic resources and associated information for a broad spectrum of crops. Develop and apply new or improved agronomic/horticultural evaluation procedures, and genetic marker-based approaches for genetic diversity assessment of the preceding genetic resources. Transfer technology in the form of crop genetic resources and associated information to researchers and breeders worldwide.
Approach:
Acquire additional unique genetic resources through collection, exchange, or donation. Determine seed viability of accessions and develop improved techniques for seed regeneration. Determine accurate taxonomy of accessions through consulting botanical authorities. Characterize plant genetic resources utilizing phenotypic descriptors and identify value-added traits. Determine pathogen contamination through virus testing and identify disease resistance in genetic resources. Utilize marker-based approaches for genetic diversity assessment and germplasm characterization. Distribute genetic resources and associated information in response to requests. Document passport, characterization, and evaluation data and provide public access through GRIN.
