Research Project:
Agroforestry Small Family Farm and Floodplain Initiative
Location:
Dale Bumpers Small Farms Research Center
Project Number: 6227-21660-002-18
Project Type:
Specific C/A
Start Date: Aug 01, 2001
End Date: Jul 31, 2006
Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to develop and adapt agroforestry technologies that minimize losses and impact flooding and provide economic opportunities for small farms.
Approach:
Tree and understory species and selections will be evaluated under controlled conditions and in the field to determine sustainability for use in agroforestry systems. The validity and usefulness of models predicting the impact of riparian buffer placement along a stream/river bed will be assessed after installation. The ability of different designs of riparian buffers to reduce run-off and losses of agricultural chemicals will be evaluated under controlled conditions and in replicated field experiments. Potential economic returns and cash flow of various agroforestry systems will be determined from data gathered at experimental sites and from systems installed by landowners. Social science techniques will be utilized to identify factors that promote adoption of new technologies by landowners. Technology transfer activities will be adopted using this information to determine if the effectiveness of technology transfer can be increased.
