Objective:
Engineer Monascus purpureus to produce B-carotene.

Approach:
Monascus purpureus, a fungus used in production of red rice, will be genetically transformed with DNA from a fungus that naturally produces beta-carotene. The goal is to obtain strains of M. purpureus that have acquired the ability to produce beta-carotene. Documents Reimbursable with FAS. Log 21021.
