Research Project: Morphological and Molecular Characterization of Invasive Fungi

Location: Systematic Botany and Mycology

Project Number: 1275-22000-198-02
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Jun 15, 2004
End Date: Sep 30, 2004

Objective:
To characterize invasive fungi that threaten U.S. agriculture. Emphasis is on canker-causing and rust fungi that are difficult to identify and classify.

Approach:
Invasive canker-causing and rust fungi will be examined macroscopically and microscopically to determine their taxonomically significant characteristics. Species will be described and illustrated with this information placed on the Internet and linked to their accurate scientific name with synonyms and alternate states as well as host and geographic distribution and location of specimens. Funds will be used primarily to purchase a image analysis system and stereomicroscope for photographing microfungi.
