Research Project: Identify Wheat Genes Resistant to Scab Infection and Don Accumulation

Location:

Project Number: 500-53-001-57
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 12, 2000
End Date: May 31, 2004

Objective:
Create a molecular map of wheat genes imparting resistance to scab infection and deoxynivalenol (DON) accumulation. Identify wheat genes controlling low DON levels, to determine the genetic relationship between wheat FHB resistance and low DON levels and identify selectable molecular markers for FHB resistance and low DON.

Approach:
Quantitative trait loci (QTL) for low DON levels will be identified by aid of the AFLP map. Fine mapping with AFLP and SSR in the major QTL regions will identify closely linked markers for field FHB resistance and low DON levels. The proposed research aims at two subjects proposed by USWBSI: food safety and biotechnology. The results will facilitate marker-assisted breeding and map-based cloning of the QTL controlling FHB resistance and low DON levels.
