Research Project:
Areawide Pest Management Program for Russian Wheat Aphid and Greenbug: Texas
Location:
Wheat, Peanut, and Other Field Crops Research
Project Number: 500-44-012-05
Project Type:
Specific C/A
Start Date: Oct 01, 2001
End Date: Sep 30, 2006
Objective:
Refine, demonstrate, and evaluate a program for the areawide IPM of the Russian wheat aphid (RWA), Diuraphis noxia, and the greenbug (GB), Schizaphis graminum.
Approach:
Effective areawide IPM programs for the RWA and GB will be established, evaluated, and optimized by enlisting grower cooperators into the program who will utilize the IPM tactics, and other growers who will not. These growers will participate in focus groups in which the economic and agronomic effectiveness of IPM practices will be evaluated. Additional information needed to evaluate and optimize the IPM program to Texas conditions will be acquired by monitoring pests (arthropods, weeds, and diseases) in wheat and alternative crops according to specific, projectwide methods in wheat and alternative crops. The economic effectiveness of the program will be evaluated by developing annual enterprise budgets for farming systems. All data will be made available in a predetermined format for program-wide analysis.
