Research Project: FACILITATE MULTIPLE PEST RESISTANT WHEAT GERMPLASM RESEARCH

Location: Plant Science and Entomology Research

Project Number: 5430-21000-005-20
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 19, 2003
End Date: Sep 14, 2008

Objective:
Expanded Objectives: 1. Conduct molecular marker mapping analysis of the H9 wheat resistance gene to Hessian fly. 2. Conduct molecular marker mapping analysis of a resistance gene to Hessian fly from Triticum dicoccum.

Approach:
Various lines of wheat and related species will be tested for Hessian fly resistance. Wheat lines with Hessian fly resistance will be analyzed to determine if they contain new resistance genes. New resistance genes will be released to collaborators for inclusion in wheat breeding program. To genetically map wheat resistance genes, mapping populations with well characterized resistance genes will be established. Tightly linked molecular markers (such as microsatellite markers) will be developed by screening mapping populations that contain different resistance genes. These markers will be used for marker-assisted breeding and for gene cloning.
