Research Project: Development of An Ft-Nir Spectrometer for in-Line and Field Use

Location: Quality Assessment Research Unit

Project Number: 6612-44000-025-02
Project Type:

Start Date: Jun 01, 2004
End Date: Sep 30, 2006

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is the development of a new NIRS instrument based on a "ruggedized" FT-IR spectrometry platform.

Approach:
An interferometer module (Midget (R)) will be obtained from the Cooperator and ARS will procure and install a Near IR beamsplitter, filter, internal calibration laser, fore optics, source, detector and potentially a Sigma-Delta A-to-D converter. The instrument will be operated with a SensIR driver in conjunction with software from ARS in the laboratory and in a research cotton gin. Both parties are actively engaged in independent research projects that require the use of small interferometers in harsh environments to measure the properties of materials. The parties agree that meeting the objectives of this project will strengthen and enhance ongoing research within the scope of this agreement to their mutual interests.
